Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario

The PPBSO — the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario — administers piping, drumming and pipe band contest at various highland games throughout Ontario. Several of these annual summer competitions have special designations, including the North American Championship, the Canadian Championship and the Ontario Championship.

The Niagara-Hamilton Branch is one of several local PPBSO branches throughout Ontario. We hold monthly meetings from October through April.

In addition to being a fun social gathering, our meetings provide opportunities to develop piping and drumming in our area.

We hold annual Amateur Competitions for amateur pipers and drummers.

We also hold the Livingstone Invitational, Agnew-Harrison Drumming Invitational, support the George Sherriff Memorial Invitational and The Highland Gala.

What is PDQB?

The PDQB was established in 2006 by the RSPBA and the member organisations of the Institute of Piping (Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming, College of Piping, National Piping Centre and Piobaireachd Society), to create a single structure of certificated qualifications in Piping, Pipe Band Drumming, Pipe Bands and associated areas.

The PDQB offers certificates to pipers and drummers, as well as piping and drumming instructors, in their respective level of competencies.

Why is the PPBSO and Niagara-Hamilton Branch promoting PDQB certifications?

PDQB certification is a great motivator for education, and works as a tool to recognize a player’s ability outside of the competition setting. Over the longer term, the PPBSO would like to implement this model so that piping and drumming qualifications would be recognized as curriculum credits by school boards.

What’s next?

Join us in the Band Room at the James Street Armouries in Hamilton for an informative PDQB session on Saturday, October 13th from 10:00am to 1:30pm, where Bob Worrall will discuss the process, intent, and subsequent steps in more detail related to Piping. A respected member of the Drumming community will also be there to share information on how this certification process will be executed and to address any questions or concerns.

This information session is open to pipers, drummers, instructors and teachers, as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about this new initiative.

A light lunch will be available.
